Upcoming Event I hope to make an appearance at the Ottawa Romance Book Fair, when a date is officially announced for 2027. This is a one-day event held at the Conference Centre, so check back soon for updates.
You never know when the time will come when your time is due to end. If you are fortunate, maybe you'll pass in your sleep, quietly, without great fanfare while those you love will surround you, sitting by your death bed, recalling the glorious days of yore and how you were such a fabulous and generous individual.
That looming day is not today, however, given that you're reading this post. Today, on this glorious day when you're alive and breathing, you've much to deal with; what with rising inflation, genetically modified food, and glyphosate contaminated food, and veggies entering the food chain that are loaded with microbial parasites, hungry enough to eat through the walls of your intestines, leaving you on intimate terms with Mr. Loo for days on end. It's not only imported food from nearby countries we need to worry about, according to the news. The percentage of imported food coming into Canada surpasses the 50% mark, in comparison to buying locally grown vegetables.
Is it any wonder why some persons indulge in drink, cigarettes and chemicals to ward off the fears of living in an imperfect world? I gave up cigarettes thirty years ago when I battled skin cancer and won. I don't miss cancer sticks at all and in fact I'm proud of myself for not slipping back into the habit, particularly if I enjoy a few cold ones with friends who are "social" smokers. Granted, I'm far from perfect. I know my body well, a kind of intimate knowledge of one's body as we carry on thriving for decades. I can't handle chemicals any more, not the way I did when I was a free-wheeling, experimenting teenager. Now I prefer the level of food that I'd call the clean stuff, organic when I can afford it. Collectively, as new generations replace their predecessors, we're becoming more sensitized to the perils of living in the 21st Century, be it contaminated food, environmental degradation, financial instability, becoming victims to online sharks and downsizing in the work place, not to mention a host of potential dangers that can make your life a living petrie dish, where you're the small organism being viewed through a microscope.
I haven't even gone into the number of illnesses that befall the human body. Seems I can't even turn on the local news these days without hearing about ticks, and their increasing numbers, nor can I ignore the conspiracy theories that some billionaire is knowingly paying for plane-drops in Ontario of boxes of ticks to spread the disease. Huh? Tell me this can't be true?
I listen to music because it uplifts me, sometimes only 30 minutes a day, if only to work out to the sound of bopping tunes. Some of my music selections are peppered with a social conscience and knowing this, I purchase their music for that reason. The last thing I want to hear from a performing band, however (and this is me being honest) is their personal views on what I should be doing or can do or have failed to do to correct our misbegotten world. I don't go to outdoor concerts to listen to someone preach to me. Allow me the freewill to educate myself, thank you very much, on what subjects are relevant to the political landscape in which I find myself.
Bluesfest will kick off in July and I've got my tickets to see The Guess Who. Can't wait! It's been years since I've attended an outdoor show, so I need to scratch this itch. After all, nostalgia and the summer seem to go hand-in-hand and this is an awesome Canadian band.
Life boils down to the deliberate management of your fears, hopes and desires. Some desire copious amounts of cigarettes, alcohol and sugar and I say more power to you! If that is your idea of enjoying life, who am I to deny you? If your idea of the perfect existence is shagging everything in sight, also more power to you. For sure, you'll depart this corporeal existence, to one day slip potentially into a netherworld of spirits and the continuum of circulating energy.
One of my favorite poets, Walt Whitman (American), sums up my feelings on how to cope in this world and he says:
"I think I could turn and live with the animals, they are so placid and self-contained. They do not lie awake in the dark and weep for their sins. They do not make me sick discussing their duty to God. Not one is dissatisfied, not one is demented with the mania of owning things. Not one kneels to another, nor to his kind that lived thousands of years ago. Not one is respectable or unhappy over the whole earth."
Thank you for your wisdom, Mr. Whitman. This is one of the reasons why music, literature and poetry will forever endure, and continues to endure. In all the millennia that humans have existed, whenever we look back on our accomplishments we tend to regard our endeavors based on real-life reminders: architecture, and the arts and all that this entails. Remove art from any culture, and what are you left with, a chronological accounting of wars waged against other cultures?
Naturally, our historical records will list the tyrants of this world, and the level of destruction wrought against the innocents of this world. But few, if any, will want to sit around the campfire discussing who was and is still regarded as the worst dictator, ever to darken the world. Rather, we'll be listening to music and making plans to explore our options for fun, to share what precious little time we each have with one another.
We may delve into periods of nostalgia, when we speak of loved ones who've passed, and how they had made a difference in our lives. Granted, some memories will not be thought of fondly, more so to those young adults who had an unforgiving childhood. I've held this belief for most of my adult life that those who survive terrible childhoods grow up to create amazing adulthood memories, while those who have only known an amazing childhood are sometimes shocked when their adulthood throws them for a curve, and knocks them down a couple of sizes.
It really all comes down to one truism: I don't care how smart you think you are, how wealthy you are, how lucky you are, who you know or who you had to blow to get ahead, you will not get out of this life unscathed. It's the one reality of life that we each would like to avoid. There will be periods in your life when it feels like your battling one hit after another, and you get through and think to yourself, "Whew!" Survive one tragedy, and then another one comes along to knock you off your feet again. Get back up and dust yourself off, and keep on walking a straight line. The road ahead will greet you. Know, however, that the wind may not always be behind your back. Fierce head-winds are an inevitability of being alive. Just ask any cyclist. Sometimes I head out to cycle, thinking I'm clever my judging wind direction, only to realize that it doesn't matter in which direction I'm headed, I'm battling head winds the entire time.
We'll be celebrating Canada Day tomorrow. I had initially thought of posting an image along with this blog post of the crowds at Parliament Hill which number in the hundreds of thousands. Not this time, however. It would've been commonplace for me to post the Canadian flag, or throngs of young kids with their painted faces. Not everyone has access to Ottawa during the week when Canada Day will take place. Some will hold their family BBQ parties in their backyard, while others will attend indoor parties in their retirement homes. I'll be whipping up one of my delicious broccoli salads, to contribute toward a BBQ party and I'm guessing... well perhaps I'm predicting that a gin and tonic, or two, might spill into my mouth, along with a wedge or two of grapefruit and lime. If you haven't tried this combination, you don't know what you're missing.
Happy July 4th to come as well to our American neighbors below. It's been years since I've traveled into the USA and I'm hoping to change this coming up, maybe in 2027. I can't avoid thinking of the USA given that I'm a regular watcher of Table of Five at CNN, to include the Amanpour Hour as well as Fareed Zakaria.
It doesn't really matter where you'll be celebrating your country's special day, so long as you have an awareness of where you are, and with whom you're sharing your time... and how well you're getting along with those people in your life that make everything about life interesting (and this includes you too). 🇨🇦
"Old people are just mean," she declared to me, "and old men are even meaner." This blunt statement had demonstrated zero ambiguity, and left nothing open to interpretation. Though, my imagination immediately pulled up a cliche of an elderly man or woman, sitting in their rocking chair, on the porch, with a cane in one hand, and their disgruntled thoughts held in the palm of their other hand, ready and willing to swing that cane like a weapon at young persons passing by them.
Life isn't meant to be easy. Life, by design, is supposed to thwart your genius plans for grandiose success. Life is about finding the strength within yourself to keep going when all odds appear to be conspiring against you. This is life's primary purpose, to throw in front of you every conceivable curve, to block your progress. Life expects you to roll up your sleeves, and get to work on sorting out the good from the bad and not to place this expectation at life's feet, that life owes you an easy living and that life is here to ensure your entire existence shall be a smooth ride.
Life's job is to be a bitch.
Your job is to cultivate an attitude that benefits you in navigating your way through life.
Right under your very cute, button of a nose, there are people living next door to you, at least potentially, who might be cultivating, Heaven forbid, marijuana—what Christians would denounce as The Devil's Weed. The horror! Say it isn't so, even though you know it is so, days in and days out.
I don't play indoor video games, and haven't in at least two decades, though I know plenty of persons who love their video game-playing time, navigating the many pitfalls, to improve and flex their skill level. I've got nothing against those who have fun doing so either because I've a nephew who plays with his wife and two boys. This is their version of family time, and I applaud them for getting together.
AI is buzzing around the globe like a busy-little bee with a secret, a hidden hive about which only the worker bees and the Queen are privy. I suspect the creators of AI-powered engines are fine and dandy with this status quo, to be ogled, rather than to be denounced. It's better to be uplifted by world users and heralded as God's gift to artist-kind. Right?
For literally every single thing we do, and I mean everything, there's a price we pay, sometimes big or sometimes small, and especially when we've chosen to jump into a situation with both feet and both eyes open. The price is what you end up having to pay for the privilege of participating in this game called life.
Some days the expressions of disdain, the downright unnecessary meanness, can feel like a waterfall of venom is spitting out of the mouths of those online, non-stop. I do not exaggerate. It also occurs in person.
It doesn't really matter what you tell yourself, that you're different, entirely unique, an original above all other originals, and decidedly not like anyone else, if you will, nor anything like your parents. Yet, and if you're honest with yourself, and take a good hard look at yourself, you'll see the interwoven threads that connect from your personality, to reach all the way back to your parents, and their parents before them.
