In the topsy-turvy world of...

2024-10-08
In the wonderful world of weather, at least in today's day and age, we are confronted with a plethora of forecasts, each changing by the minute by the day, as you wake every morning and haven't a phucking clue what to expect. Like the other day, it began with wind, then evolved to sun, more wind, followed by a tonne of rain, that pelted down hard like a slant of icy sleet hitting the window pane. Yet, some ten days ago it felt like summer with temps inching past 31 Celsius, and I reveled in this summer-like feeling. I wanted to run away and play the whole day long, to avoid work.

Weather is like the pendulum of human emotions, ever changing, never remaining in the same place twice for very long. Yes, that is it... weather and emotions are as close an analogy as any good writer could contrive. With emotion, there is no set example of good or bad just plain, raw feelings that bubble up to the surface and demand to be recognized. Philosophers might impart to you their sage advice that people do things out of a sense of necessity, which is true of course, but I'd add to this equation that people do things to serve the need of fulfilling their emotions. And with emotions, like weather, there are deep dark crevices that only a seasoned spelunker would be brave enough to venture into the pitch black to explore. The Greek philosophers, being the grand-daddies of philosophical thought and in helping the rest of the uncivilized world to use their noggin, believed that when men reached the ripe age of 75 years, they were no longer capable of producing genuine emotion for anyone else, other than feeling acute emotional dips for themselves alone. I believe there is another angle from which to approach this fact: when someone reaches the age of 75 or higher, they acknowledge younger people really don't give a shit about them and so therefore why should they give two hoots for anyone else?

Run and hide, crawl up the side of a building, dig out the old box of socks from the back of the closet, you can never escape the depths of your emotions. You will continue to serve your emotional needs so long as your heart beats and your mind is able to string together enough words to formulate ideas in your head. But know and accept all along that your emotions are the driving force behind your actions, not your grandiose ideas of becoming the supreme and accurate weather forecaster, who can foretell the day before, much less one week before, what you're going to feel like the next day. You never know which emotion will assert itself until you come face to face with it. Imagine what emotions must connect with one another for such dramatic events to occur such as a mother killing her child, a wife killing her husband or vice versa or a man taking a bat to another man's head. These are not logical emotions but rampant, out of control emotions. Again like the weather, emotions are malleable and impressive, even at their worst.

As I continue to read my pile of books, sometimes I'm drawn to reflecting on one book that I had read some 15 years back, and never bothered to read it a second time. This book sold a ridiculous number of copies, in the range of 300 million, and it's called The Secret. One chapter is devoted to becoming the master of your thoughts. The book recommends daily meditative sessions whereby you must bring yourself to a state of calm, thereby gaining greater control over your emotions. I utilize meditation, to sit still, to just 'be' and at times I even achieve a state of total calm after a session of meditation. But all it takes for my emotions to become derailed is one nincompoop (thanks Bugs Bunny) who pushes my buttons out of a sense of complete and total disregard for me, or downright stupidity, and then my emotions propel me to a state of losing my temper... almost.

On the whole, I consider myself to be an emotionally balanced individual (don't we all? 😂) and I make it a point to not over-react in situations. But there are times... I mean there are times when I wish I kept a bat hidden in my kitchen so that when some politicians come knocking on my door to discuss the latest and greatest plans, that I would like to be able explain to the Mister Police Officer how my emotions got away from me and I just bloody well lost it!

Perhaps I should re-qualify that last statement by way of saying you never lose emotions, you only just lose track of your sense of control over your emotions, from time to time. For like the weather, we humans are in a continual state of flux. I wouldn't have it any other way. After all, no one understands the darkest depths of my emotions better than me. Today, I feel like the rain: cool, windswept, intermittent and angry, and this just leaves me feeling hungry for some dark chocolate covered almonds or cinnamon dusted pecans.

Thankfully, there is humor, which helps to take off the rough edge of some of our more distasteful emotions.

As Bugs Bunny would say, "Rise, Sir O of K! Rise, Sir Beef of Loin." 🤣 I wish for you a good belly laugh, wherever you can find it.
