It is my cherished desire each day to get through every bloody day without allowing stress to further stress me out. However, this foolish girl needs reminding from time to time that regardless of how I may think, act or feel, there'll be times when the Universe delivers to me an untoward surprise, a load of stress that I simply couldn't predict.
Take the beginning of the new year, as one fine example. Colleagues return from their holiday break ready to break records on productivity, and this can translate to stress, if you're in a support role to a senior Executive. It's easy to delegate, but much harder to carry out the requests; hence the stress.
It is true: stress is rather stressful, to the body, mind and spirit. Stress wears out your ability to think calmly and efficiently because you're attempting to think clearly while under stress. This is precisely how I had felt at the beginning of a new year, every year, when I worked for a tax partner, knowing that tax season was around the corner, and that months prior to the end of tax season in Canada, April 30th, the early prep work had to begin with regard to updating, and confirming contact details, before reaching out to clients as a gentle reminder that it was time for them to collect their slips, and get ready. Imagine the degree of stress that would magnify if say I had young kids to deal with, over and above a husband, a house, pets and my novel-writing to boot.
Stress gives every person a valid reason for pouring themselves a glass of chilled wine, end of day; just half a glass or one full glass. There are innumerable suggestions on coping with stress. The one which sends my belly into laughing spasms is advising people to just calm down and meditate. What a hoot! Meditation requires peace and tranquility in order for it to work and when you're feeling stressed, it feels impossible to shut off the endless chatter going on in your brain. Food and booze and sex are tried and true methods because these allow you figuratively to step outside your body and mind if only for a moment. But the feeling of running away from your stress is short-lived because the minute the euphoria wears off from having killer sex or a fabulous meal or three shots of hard liquor, your mind kicks into action and begins to go to work on resolving the current stressful situation.
So where does this leave people?
Some simply run away to other countries. Others quit their stressful job and sleep all day, which some would call an acute form of depression. Others turn to friends to combat their stress by way of unloading their worries in endless bitching sessions (more often than not to a therapist). Yet, complaining only places more attention on the very subject about which you're complaining, bringing it to life, making it bigger. For me, I can't sleep forever because my mind is the kind that loves to crackle and pop when I wake up, four to six hours after sleeping. My mind that is ready to run a marathon. Sex is the answer, I believe, whether w/ an unknown, a long-time companion or just yourself. Sex guarantees that endorphin rush and endorphins, to be precise, are neurotransmitters found in the brain that have pain-relieving properties similar to morphine.
Incidentally, and in case you're wondering, there are three major types of endorphins: beta endorphins (found primarily in the pituitary gland); enkephalins (opioid peptides that are produced in the brain and spinal cord) and dynorphin (a class of opioid peptides that are released in response to stress), both of which are distributed throughout the nervous system.
So, these vital endorphins are thought to be connected to the physiological processes that include euphoric feelings, appetite modulation and the release of sex hormones. 🤔
Probably by now you've some inkling where I'm going with this post, following that previous comment on endorphins... to the realm of chocolate that produces an endorphin-like effect, launching me to happy-land thereby equipping me w/ the ability to handle stress effectively - for once and for all!
I don't expect stress to disappear from my life. On the contrary, I think as we age, we deal w/ stress less efficiently bcus our mental faculties are not as sharp as they used to be. But the good side to all of this is that even tho' we age, at least we can take comfort in knowing that our wisdom is higher developed than say those young hooligans who think they're the only ones in possession of all modern-day knowledge. By the hook or by the crook, we'll outsmart them and with any luck think of a way to transfer the stress to them. Ha! It helps too that when we age, we give a lot less of a sh*t about what goes down around us.
Hee hee… there is method to this girl's madness. Good luck dealing with your stress. Don't let it get to you.
