Knocking on the door of Mr. Wolf

2024-01-23
"I'm very scared," said Little Red Riding Hood as she tentatively knocked on the door of Mr. Wolf with her bread basket of warm, sticky pudding, hoping for the best. You just don't know what's on the other side of that door. One is meant to venture out into the world and discover new things, but knocking on the door of a wolf? How many would knowingly do so? Not many, I suspect. Not many because no one wants a wolf coming after them. It's like running into Dr. Lecter in a dark alley and asking him for directions. Maybe Dr. Lecter might point down the street and tell you that's where you should be headed, or maybe he just might decide to eat you with a nice Chianti and some fava beans (and no; this joke will never get old).

Wolves come in all sizes. Some wolves are lone, Alpha male wolves whose hunting grounds are anywhere where there are females. And other male wolves are meant to obey and follow the alpha male wolves. This is dating is in the 24th year of the 21st Century. As a woman, you either knock on the door of an alpha male wolf, who opens his home to you when in fact it is a lair filled with the bones of other females, who've come and are long gone or at other times you knock on the door of a lesser wolf, a beta male, who invites you in but may not necessarily know quite what to do with you.

I've pulled myself out of the game of knocking on the doors of wolves, at least for the time being. More often than not, I encounter the lesser of these two wolf varieties, the beta wolf, who's too shy and afraid to deal with a strong-willed woman. But here's the rub... when it comes to Alpha male wolves, you've got to be just as misleading with them, as they are with you, and literally lead them by the nose. This is to say, you have to teach them how to treat you, how to respect you, how to phuck you and more importantly how to love you. Whether he's the top wolf or the dinky wolf at the end of the food chain, women in modern society must be able to recognize one wolf from another and be able to adopt her modus operandi accordingly.

Honestly, I feel as though I'm being abstruse in my commentary this morning, on purpose. As I've emerged out of 2023, and venture wide-eyed into 2024, I can't for the life of me see the value of entering into a new romantic relationship whereby I have to relinquish my independence, the freedom to live alone, vicariously, and not to have to answer to a partner, which is what it means to enter into a relationship. Your needs are no longer foremost on the agenda because your status implies that the needs within the relationship are now shared, and of paramount importance. Many would agree this should be the aim, to balance each other's needs with fair-mindedness. Let's not forget, however, that it is the start of the new year. Many will be focused on taking off poundage gained over the holidays, while others will be reeling in horror when credit card balances come in... Yikes!

I'd much rather wait for the arrival of Spring, when randy male wolves are primed. Perhaps, too, I'll dress in sheep's clothing to allow me the luxury of observing each wolf, to determine if I'm being pulled toward an Alpha or a Beta. Who am I kidding? I've known since the age of nine years that I never wanted to behave like a stereotypical woman who pines for a wedding, to wallow in all the trappings of getting hitched, to procreate, to serve and manage a household, as well as to work (given the high cost to raise a family which requires intensive labour for years). On the contrary, I know who I am and what I want. I don't consider myself to be relationship material, owing to my fussy, independent nature. I do, however, give birth to books and the amount of time required to take a fledging novel and bring it to the stage where it's ready to be released into the wild is as much a time-consuming effort as is required to care for a husband, children, though perhaps not as expensive as paying for higher education. I say this because I've spent the last nine years writing novel seven, at my own pace, while working full-time because the option of being supported by a husband, while I write, and without having to work to support me, isn't an option, or rather isn't a viable option for me at all. I don't want to live as a pauper any more than I want to be beholding to someone else to support me.

Never look for logic, when it comes to interaction with the opposite sex, the same sex, or two disparate agendas: yours and his (or hers and hers or his and his). Male wolves are masters at verbal stroking, to present to you their best selves. They are also mimics and will alter their behaviour to make themselves appear to you as close to the version that they believe you may be seeking. If you choose to dip your toes into the pond of what might be, you may find something hidden on the inside that'll surprise you, and if not, at least you'll know that it's entirely up to you whether you want to be brave and knock on the door of Mr. Wolf.

Choose wisely. It's easy to get into situations in the beginning, a sort of luster that shines on the outside, with all the best intentions, full of hope that your trajectory will go only one way, always in a positive direction, rather than the reality: pairings zig and zag and sometimes the wheels fall off entirely.

To reiterate, it's much easier to get into situations and a lot harder to extricate yourself when things go awry. And this distinction doesn't distinguish between the kind of wolf that has caught your fancy... all the while Mr. Wolf drools and licks his chops, moments before inviting you indoors to his lair for some hanky-panky.
