Losing my spirituality...

2025-04-24
Alright you b*stards... no laughing but I'm a total flake. I freely admit this fact about myself. I believe in all sorts of things, especially those kinds of things that can't be seen or felt or heard. Whoever said something has to be proven to be believed? [More than likely a scientist, before it was proven, only afterward to be disproven, and re-proven]. Is this not the definition of spirituality? [an unwavering faith in something without yet being given the proof].

Years back I traveled with a gal-pal out of the city, into a small city, to visit a tea-leaf reader, who has long passed into that other realm of existence which cannot be defined. I only knew her by her first name Barb. She was a wonderful, unassuming lady who had been giving tea-leaves readings for over 30 years. She never asked for money, nor did she advertise, or post a fee up front. It was always left up to the visitor to her home, if they chose to leave behind a donation. This to me says a lot about a reader who isn't holding their hand out, looking for a hand-out of money upfront, before their reading proves itself to be significant.

As I had begun this post, no laughing. Now, you may scoff and point the finger as if to say this girl is a P.T. Barnum fool (because he's famous for saying there was a sucker born every minute) but Barb was the real thing, I swear! My mother tagged along with me only once to see Barb in the early 90s, more precisely in 1993, and during her reading, Barb told my mother that my father was very ill and didn't have much time left. At that time, she advised my mom to spend as much time with my dad as possible, to which my mom immediately said, "You're totally wrong because he's fine!" So went her denial. No sooner had a month gone by, and my father was diagnosed with lung and brain cancer and given six months to live. He died in August 1994 because his cancer spread so fast that the doctors basically gave upon on him. I tell this story because there are people out there in the world, who I believe, are gifted with the talent of sight, that third eye we cannot see but which lives within us. Some refer to it as the third eye, the one that you cannot see but which exists in the centre of your forehead. You may choose to call it intuitiveness or psychic ability or whatever label you want to hang around your neck but the truth is that some of us are more prescient in nature than others.

Take myself, for example, I've made predictions about some friends and families for years, since I was a little girl, and these have come to pass. I also read Tarot cards for friends for free because I think it's a grand way to spend time together but also because I love to slurp wine as I interpret their cards. I advise my friends upfront to look upon the activity as entertainment, which it is, and more often than not, they come back to me down the road to say what I foretold had in fact happened as I said it would. But allow me to return to my title of losing my spirituality. My tea-leaf reading friend, may she RIP, was also open about beliefs that we each carry within us. So I felt comfortable in asking her opinion on the subject of spirituality, and to specifically tell me how she would define spirituality, to which she turned the tables and made me answer my own question first, before offering her answer. I said what I continue to believe to this day: spirituality is looking within yourself for answers, to examine your own moral centre, and your connectedness to life as opposed to looking outside of yourself, such as when people turn to religion as their opiate, for answers, to help them make decisions. Whereas, looking within means you know when you're doing someone wrong. You don't need religious text to tell you that you've done wrong.

Barb agreed that my explanation was a sound one, and then she added that spirituality is the ability to hear and receive messages from the Universe when you're not looking for them. Very interesting take. Because we are human with blood pumping through our veins and energy coursing through our brains, as we think our thoughts, however small or large, we are all part of the great cosmos and therefore we're all spiritual beings whether we're cognizant of this fact or not. Some are just more in tune with themselves than others.

Wikipedia has a cool interpretation as well:
-------
Spirituality, in a narrow sense, concerns itself with matters of the spirit. The spiritual, involving (as it may) perceived non-physical eternal verities (or even ability) involving humankind's ultimate nature, often contrasts with the earthly, with the material, or with the worldly. A perceived sense of connection forms a central defining characteristic of spirituality - connection to something greater than oneself, which includes an emotional experience of awe and reverence. Equally importantly, spirituality relates to matters of sanity and psychological health. Like some forms of religion, spirituality often focuses on personal experience (mysticism). Spirituality may involve perceiving or wishing to perceive life as more important, more complex or more integrated with one's world view; as contrasted with the merely sensual. Many spiritual traditions, accordingly, share a common spiritual theme: the "path", "work", practice or tradition of perceiving and internalizing one's true nature and relationship to the rest of existence (God, the creation of the Universe or life) and becoming free of lesser egoic self (or ego) in favour of being more fully one's true self.

Yummy! That was a mouthful. Either way, however you carve up definitions, it still comes down to one thing: If you perceive and believe yourself to be a spiritual being, your intent and heart and brain will gravitate to this ideology in a number of ways because inwardly you believe it's to your benefit to be, feel and live as a spiritual being. And, as for the so-called messages from the Universe, well I think this is like receiving an unexpected surprise like a rare chocolate drop that falls from the sky and hits you on the noggin, telling you to open up your mouth and swallow... er that is I mean to say telling me to open my eyes and see the obvious. Damn chocolate.

Hey, like I said, no laughing. None of us should be too proud to take whatever help the Universe is offering.
