A special kind of energy

2025-06-03
Scientifically, the definition of energy is described as having an outer membrane that protects the different, inner energy from another outside source of energy. Hence, all living, breathing organisms transmit true, pure energy in their particular fashion. I think all could agree with this statement — that each person, animal and plant gives off a special version of energy that is intrinsically unique to that particular person, animal or plant.

Some would go out on the ledge further and argue that rocks contain energy by virtue of the fact that they exist in the here and now. Though, I've never known a rock to transmit energy to me personally, so I'm a little hesitant to believe this one, yet I'll concede that Mother Earth is a powerful force. All her inhabitants are connected to this force. There must be a reason why Indigenous mythology includes an understanding of the role that each element plays in the world. For example, if you remove a rock from the forest, the Indigenous may be inclined to chastise you for failing to give something back to Mother Earth, in exchange for taking her rock, and that tobacco would be a good offering. I've one friend whose Metis grandfather had actively observed this practice. So, when I returned from Peru, after hiking Machu Picchu, I brought back with me a piece of slate taken from the tippy-top of the Salcantay mountain, some 10,000 years old and my dear friend asked this very question, "What did you give back to the mountain in return?" My answer, "My reverence because I was deliriously happy to have not died on the mountain, hiking up to an elevation point of 15,000 feet above sea level." This innocent piece of slate found its way into my seventh novel POM, so it has been immortalized in a sense, or it might still be back on top of the mountain with the other 100,000+ pieces of slate. [I had literally kissed the mound of pieces of slate when we made it to the top].

I haven't lived with dogs in many, many years, nor have I lived with birds or horses or turtles or lizards but I can attest to the energy that kitties transmit - indifference and love. I believe their particular brand of energy has to do with grace and agility and the manner in which they interact with their world around them. Every time a kitty wakes up they immediately begin to interpret the world around them through the power of smell, much as do dogs. With birds, it's sight and sound and with lizards, well, you can fill in the blanks here on your own. So I shall return to my theory that animals and plants give off special energy and with kitties it's also their nature to be the masters of finding comfort — that unique lethargy which allows them to sleep eighteen hours each day in peace; anywhere will do where there is a warm blanket or sheets or a ray of sunshine. My Indigenous friend believes that dogs provide an energy signature of enthusiasm and that birds give a heightened sense of awareness, whereas fish are about silence and peace. He also tells me that if a hornet gets into your house, don't speak because in their mythology, hornets carry with them evil energy and if you speak, your words will be used against you in future. At the time I was told this, I thought, "Hmmm... cool myth."

Regardless of the variety of animal, plant or insect influence, I accept that some form of energy is being transmitted by these living creatures into your life. This is a good thing. Well, for the most part. The women out there who own kitties may find that their feline pet displays their owner's personality, and so if you're a total b*tch, then I'll let you extrapolate this train of thought to its logical end. Our pets mirror our inner soul or another way to view it is that our energy in turn transmits to our pet and is re-produced in their behaviour.

As for the energy of humans, a delightful conversation years back with my photographer friend had centered on this idea that all humans are self-obsessed with their particular problems. I agreed whole-heartedly, as I glugged my glass of wine. Yes, I, too, am often self-obsessed with my artistic projects as some might be about their children's achievements that in effect are an extension of themselves. The energy we give out is either positive, negative or ambivalent. You know when you're in the company of a chronic complainer or someone who is grossly negative. Similarly, you want to enjoy the company of someone who is light-hearted and happy, giving off a wonderful vibe that invariably attracts more positive energy.

I begin every day with a hopeful attitude. I feel lucky to be alive and able to pursue my dreams. If I experience a black mood, I've come to accept that these moods will pass, the way a happy mood will pass. If you were happy all the time, I'd know for sure that you were on medication. And, conversely, if you were unhappy all the time, you'd probably be prescribed medication too. There is surely something to be said about the validity of cultivating a positive attitude, one that embraces the spirit of gratitude, to focus on what you have, rather than to focus on what's missing in your life.

Gratitude takes practice to cultivate positive energy. That's where surrounding yourself with Mother Earth's plants and her array of greenery, or her wonderful array of animals can help to remind you that you're not the only energy worth holding onto on this planet.
