Some hold the opinion that there are three essential elements to living a peaceful life. So, here are three obvious top contenders for this list:
1. a good pair of shoes
2. a healthy bowel movement each day
3. a good bed
Number one has generally been a challenge for me. I've been plagued with issues in finding a good pair of shoes. It doesn't matter if I spend $200 or $10, the new pair of shoes or runners or boots or sandals will invariably give me blisters, until such time as I've endured the pain long enough to wear in the walking apparatus — typically at the same time when the shoes need to be replaced. Boo-hoo for me 😆 That's the way it is with my tender tootsies and shall forever be, which is also the reason why I ensure that I give myself regular pedicures so my feet will look happy and healthy, even if they are crucified by leather.
Number two, to be expected (please no laughing at this ridiculous pun) is something that everyone needs to occur with regularity and great ease. Trouble is few are actually regular in this department for a host of reasons; one being poor nutrition and a diet that's lacking in vegetables. There are those, too, who suffer from the opposite of being too regular to the point of disabling these individuals from leading a normal life. The medical term is IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) and can afflict any gender at any age. I've know people who deal with it daily, and how this awful condition negatively disturbs sleep patterns and every aspect of life that has anything to do with being normal. You never know when you need a loo close by and you are therefore subject to keeping this thought ever in mind, if you suffer from IBS. Fortunately for me, I'm blessed with a healthy metabolism, thanks in part to a mother who served us porridge and soup and vegetables until the cows came when we were kids. Now, I willingly choose to make vegetables a part of my daily diet by way of eating salads seven days a week, as well as in the morning when I add three heaping tablespoons of frozen kale to my protein shake.
Number three, last but not least, is a bed, a fabulous bed, a good bed that rises off the floor, beckoning you to come sleep hither, wrap these clean sheets around you, naked, vulnerable and prone to long slumber — a bed is symbolically powerful and innocent all at once. A bed conjures up images of little kids in pajamas that have felt footies sewn into the legs, tucked in at night with a bedtime story. A bed also has an adult allure to it. You want to grab your nearest partner and pull them into your bed, take them to your bed, make them a part of your bedtime story, or make them your full-time bed partner to do un-Godly, fabulous wonderful and yes unmentionable things to them, because that's what adults do in bed. To sleep, to dream and ponder while you lay awake staring at the ceiling is perhaps the last portal to imagination that has helped many an artist escape the clutches of despair in not being able to figure out a plot-line or how to start a new story. Many an artist after a good night's sleep has dreamt of how to resolve a problem. They owe it all to the bed.
I last bought a new bed 17 years ago and it came with a 25-year lifetime guarantee, and so far (touch wood) the guarantee has been true, because the mattress is memory foam with five-pound compression so that if a person were to stand on it, and step off, the memory foam rebounds to its original shape. I also have on this fabulous bed a bamboo-mattress cover which helps to avoid body heat and moisture from accumulating. This memory foam has not once given me a kink in my back. It's like sleeping with the hands of a Greek God, whose fingers press into your flesh and comfort and shape to your body, allowing you to feel touched and warm as you fall asleep. Why I didn't buy a memory foam before can only be because the quality didn't exist years earlier. After sleeping on it for two days, it made me realize that the prior spring-coil mattress I used to sleep on was a piece of crap that left my back in knots and twists.
Suffice it to say, the above diatribe may be too much to stomach on this Thursday morning. I've got to trundle along now and get my rear into high gear. Allow me to leave you with this thought:
"Hey you! Come lay hither and let us sleep and dream of shoes and good poos which are, after all, the three essential elements of good living, didn't you know?"
Upcoming Event I hope to make an appearance at the Ottawa Romance Book Fair, when a date is officially announced for 2027. This is a one-day event held at the Conference Centre, so check back soon for updates.
