Every day should be devoted to hunting for the golden moments, those times when we reflect back on them years later and say aloud to ourselves, "Wow! Weren't those the good ol' days?" Because each moment after you wake up, the first thoughts in your head should be a re-affirmation that you're alive and breathing, able-bodied and still thinking.
I wake up every time thinking to myself, "This is my year to excel. This is the ideal year for me to expand my ideas, to grow into the position and place I've been striving to achieve. Control will be mine as long as I want it!" Control, of course, belongs on the pile heap of illusions, and this is only my opinion, you see, on a subject that is subjective at best. But the intent of my morning declaration I make to myself is to re-connect with my role in my life story. I'm at the helm and not someone else, like the dastardly Government and its far-reaching arm, the tax department, or in Canada what we know as Revenue Canada. Granted, RevCan is able to dig its big thumb into my pie and pull out several blackbirds but I'm the one who's in charge. I never want to lose sight of this fact.
As for finding golden moments or the gold in my life, I only ever have to look as far as the dinner table or one phone call away. The golden moments are being able to converse with a parent, while they're still alive and breathing, being able to enjoy a hearty meal with dear friends while countless others are starving to death. And equally as important, being in possession of some money, and the willpower to pursue your dreams regardless of what people tell you about the impossibility of pursuing these dreams.
There is also gold to be found in lending your expertise to another individual, thereby helping them to achieve their goals. I've always made my resume and writing skills available to a host of friends, often re-designing their resumes from scratch, as well as writing essays for people who've been ultimately accepted into Universities because I know so well how to pile up the b.s. to baffle the academic brains. The gold may not be readily available at the outset but eventually it comes back to me when another friend elects to give up their precious time to help me. It all goes around and comes around. And often, what begins as a lump of coal can be transformed into gold through the genuine care and effort of one individual.
This wee lassie is slowly exiting the territory of chapter two for her eighth novel. I takes me bloody well too much time to hit my stride when I begin a new novel because I have to get the opening chapter just right, before I move on to the second to rinse and repeat, and then the third and so on. Once I get into chapter three, however, this is a magic crossing line for me that sets me off on my path, to begin my long run down the road to uncover precious gold nuggets, while pulling my imagination together, and hopefully a new story worth the while to read.
[Note: the line 'there's gold in them thar hills' is from the wisdom portrayed in Bugs Bunny] 😆
