It is through the discerning eye of a longtime friend that we are sometimes more in tune with viewing ourselves in a different light.
I've more often than not, not thought of myself as a typical woman. I mean to say that I don't necessarily think like the women around me. Because women around me talk an awful lot about their love of shoes, and purses, and I don't appear to have this instinct, though I fully appreciate the fine craftsmanship and effort that goes into the design and manufacturing process. Women also speak about their desire and fondness for colors and are quick to make reference to particular shades that never cross my mind. I deal in primary colors and soft shades of this and that, you know pastels and the like. I've never referred to a color as chartreuse and I wouldn't know chartreuse if I tripped over it. The women I know are also particular about their living surroundings in as much that the cushions and tables and chairs and lamps must be coordinated ever so perfectly. Not I. I could give a tinker's damn how my furniture looks so long as it is not covered in fluff, hair, dirt or dust. I don't care for stains either. I'm particular about the cleanliness of my apartment but not quite that bad to the point of obsessive compulsiveness.
Those who've known me for decades, might offer this as an explanation as to why I behave like a woman who has the mind of a man operating inside the body of a woman. I just see myself as a woman who loves to play sports, has always been sports minded, and while I've gone through periods of shelling out loads of money for sky-high stilettoes that cost a pretty penny, I'm also happy to shell out money for a superior brand of road bike to cycle, or sports footwear and the like. There's shouldn't be a gender demarcation point when it comes to clothing or shoes but I see where people are going with this, because some persons never lose their love of shoes. I, on the other hand, stopped wearing stilettoes and yet I am drawn to sandals.
Well, during a conversation, not too long ago, a male friend whom I've known for 30+ years had thoughtfully pointed out that he and I are able to engage in 'normal' discussions because I don't think like a normal woman. "Really?" I asked. "Because I certainly feel like a normal woman." To which my friend pointed out that women he has had occasion to spend an extended period of time with have all been 'irrational' and 'too emotional'. My, my... these are dangerous and big pronouncements to make to a woman that my species is irrational and emotional. I could counter and state that I find men are far more erratic and emotional than women because men are quick to temper, and scientific research confirms that frontal lobe functionality of men isn't as developed the way it is in women, which explains why men have less impulse control, and make up over 90% of prison populations. However, scientists contend that men brains are more analytical in nature than women's brains which are more intuitive. [Here I'd like to point out the presence of a bundle of nerve fibers, a fibrous membrane, like a network of connections that in Latin are called corpus callosum, which connects both hemispheres of the brain. The corpus callosum is an intricate network for women but no bigger than a strand of dental floss for men, and this is the reason why scientists suggest that men utilizes more of their analytical brain vs women whose brains are better connected between both hemispheres, the reason for greater intuition. I'm not making this up. Look it up!]
Yet, and when it comes to the perception that men have of women, or that women have of men, these are all generalizations, more or less, and never forget that opinions are like a**holes and we each have one and therefore our opinions count for something, regardless if they're contrary to the norm. In fact, we should stand up and fight with our lives for the right of individuals to express contrary opinions. Would you not agree?
Herein lies my central problem. If by the perception of the men around me that they believe I think more like a man, then would a man feel attracted to a woman who thinks more like them? Curious, to be sure, I tell myself. I've never looked at a man and thought this guy thinks like a woman. Only this opposite reality must also be true and prevalent in some circles of society. I honestly believe that people think the way they are predisposed to think and that's all there's to it. Delving into worlds of astrology, Western and Eastern, has taught me that we each are attracted to different modes of entertainment, which is how I view astrology, and that we each are inclined to devote our time to these modes of entertainment all depending on how fulfilled we feel after having devoted our time. Take playing video games, as an example. Hours upon hours of video game playing can occur between best buddies or married couples or men and women competing against one another. Do you think they weigh the issues against how their opponent thinks, either like a man or woman, or are they more interested in just beating the pants or panties off their opponent?
It comes down to accepting people for who they are and for who they present themselves to be, rational or irrational, emotional or non-emotional, truthful or game-playing. I generally reach for the honest ones, those who leave their game-playing tactics at home, for when they want to spin up their latest video game. I really don't care if you're a man who thinks like a woman or if you're a woman who thinks like a man. However, somewhere along the line I've come to accept that women who are like me are often viewed by men as thinking like a man because we tend to have male friends as our closest friends, rather than women as our closest friends.
Ultimately, and in the end, this is one of the reasons why the world is an interesting place, because of the variety of people and what they each bring to the table ― something a little different. I learned a few months back that I was born with the kind of brain scientists describe as having a condition called 'aphantasia' ― a brain that is unable to voluntarily form images in their mind's eye. Only between 1-4% of the population have this type of brain and it doesn't differentiate between men or women. It doesn't matter how calm, focused or relaxed I am or how long I meditate and force images into my mind, if you were to ask me to think of a bright red apple, there would be a blank slate in my mind.
Perhaps this condition aphantasia potentially explains the absence of desire in me to select the right color to coordinate with just the right piece of furniture. Or, maybe it just means that I have a practical mind, and I can live with the same antique furniture for decades, never feeling the urge to buy new furniture just for the helluvit.
I shall leave you with some lovely shades of chartreuse and let you ponder whether you're in touch with your feminine or masculine side. In the end, it doesn't really matter, so long as you remain in touch with your humanity.
Upcoming Event I hope to make an appearance at the Ottawa Romance Book Fair, when a date is officially announced for 2027. This is a one-day event held at the Conference Centre, so check back soon for updates.
