When the Universe speaks...

2025-08-07
You're supposed to listen closely when the Universe speaks. The rule of thought that governs your place in the Universe has as much to do with how you feel about yourself and the world around you, as much as it is a reflection of what the Universe is giving back to you, what is being transmitted to you.

I had such an experience, thanks to my principal editor, who over dinner, presented to me with a gift of two first edition pocketbooks of poetry by Dorothy Parker: 'Enough Rope' and 'Sunset Gun' respectively. I nearly did a double-take, in fact, I was surprised by his gift. You see, and prior to receiving his wonderful offering, I had been slogging it out re-reading my first novel in preparation to release a second edition. While doing so, I was purposely channeling the creative wit and talent of Dorothy Parker each time I turned on my computer and sat to read and re-write. I believe we each are connected to the here and now, with physical beings and material things. But because energy never dies, I also believe there's a connection still with the spiritual and metaphysical world; hence my desire and willingness to connect with some great artists long passed, and to channel where possible concepts and ideas that cannot be readily observed.

And why not? Why should I have to pretend that the creative imagination is limited merely to the physical world? When you open up yourself to every possibility, your world becomes larger and a richer place for it, as do you.

I've read Enough Rope and Sunset Gun multiple times, and I've resisted dog-earing the pages because these gems are after all First Editions. So instead, I use post-it notes, the tiniest of post-it notes, to flag the poems that I commit to memory. I re-read again and again her poems and am wholly impressed with Dorothy's phrasing — she cuts a swath through literary rhyme with the ease of a rushed, hungry mother buttering her morning toast, before getting the kids ready for school.

Dorothy died in New York in 1967 at the ripe age of 73 and her caustic wit has remained very much alive long after her departure.

To say that I am thrilled that the Universe is looking out for me, by way of my comrade, who parted with these books in order to gift them to me, only adds to the mystique of writing. It happens, when you least expect it, when you've looked up to the ceiling to wonder when inspiration is going to hit, as you struggle to fine-tune an opening paragraph or one measly sentence — an idea comes into your mind from some other place and fits precisely and perfectly into that space with which your mind has grappled. [This concludes my very long run-on sentence 😆]

Here is one of my all-time favorite's of Dorothy's:

By the time you swear you're his,
Shivering and sighing,
And he vows his pleasure is
Infinite; undying —
Lady, make a note of this;
One of you is lying.

When the Universe speaks, you can choose to listen or close your ears. Not I. I've a mind to listen because not everything can or should be explained. And, while I'm on this ride called writing and life, I want to not just survive but thrive in every way possible.
