Love on the riverbank

2025-08-12
One longtime friend makes it a point of declaring to me at the beginning of every summer that he phucking loves summer! Why? Because of the scantily clad young girls in short-shorts and skimpy tops. Suppose I can't blame him, any more than I'd blame someone of the same sex lusting for their same sex. Spring is the prelude to the time of lust, which is summer, and we are currently in the deep throes of summer, now into week two of the month of August.

What I love about this time of year is the lack of self-consciousness that I see with couples. Take my cycle ride from last weekend, as an example. One section of the Ottawa canal path weaves behind Algonquin College and turns along the riverbank of a tributary to the Ottawa river, that touches along Strathcona Park. It is here that I typically see couples intermingling on the riverbank, legs and arms folded into one another, oblivious and uncaring if a passer-by were to view them. Know that I've done this too, though not most recently.

This is where opinions can easily agree or diverge. According to an argument with my friend, he doesn't feel that every single body belongs on display for the public, that some persons should be wearing more than just a flimsy T-shirt or short shorts, and that they should be fully covered.

"I see," I said. "So you want only perfection and youth on display. You don't want your eyes to be offended, yes?"

"That's right," he shot back. "They're subjecting their bodies to the general public. Not everyone should have the right to do this."

It's a brutally honest opinion and one that is no doubt shared by many but I argued in defence of their right to display their love. And yet, in contradiction to myself, I posted not too long ago about how I strongly felt that men should at least cover their upper-torso if these bodies look like they're nine months pregnant. Clearly, this current post when weighed against that previous post makes me feel a little hypocritical. If I'm of the opinion that every couple should be able to display their affection in public, then why can't an individual bare their upper torso? Are these two situations the same? Summer doesn't distinguish between the two. Yet, the intense heat plays a role to encourage people to dress lightly, though this doesn't necessarily apply to touch.

I'm not suggesting that every couple should roll on the grass, digging their tongues into orifices bcus I don't particularly care to see flagrant displays of lust from anyone, even gorgeous people. However, enjoying the beautiful, warm summer and allowing yourself to lounge on the grass, arm in arm is the stuff of romance and affection. How can anyone place a perspective on it that would fit with everyone's idea of love? It'd be like trying to recommend to people who are offended by some particular novels that if you're offended by what you're reading, close the book and put the damn novel down, and never return to it. The same applies to movies. If the movie you're watching is too violent, stop the movie. Similarly, if you don't care to view people expressing affection with one another in public, turn your bloody head away, stop staring!

Never ever should any of us want to construct or live in a society that sets out rules and conduct for behaviour in public... at least when it comes to displays of lust, and taking into consideration laws that observe decency in public spaces. This type of atmosphere is more common in countries where Hindu and Muslim faith is observed, and where men and women are not permitted to hold hands in public, much less kiss. Having traveled into some of these countries, I've witnessed firsthand when even a bare shoulder might elicit a slap to the head, or unwanted scowls and I've come to the conclusion that these countries are quite fine with these rules, tho' they're not applied uniformly across the board, bcus young men aren't discouraged from walking arm in arm, or expressing their affection in public, like a warm hug. I've traveled as a single woman into countries where these laws are stringently applied and I felt as though I was staring into the faces of people whose hearts had long been broken. Imagine a poor kingdom where the King decides to whom you should pledge your heart. In libertarian societies, we call this arranged marriages. Easily over 90% of marriages in India are arranged, most notably in the lower casts, whereas the upper casts are free to marry whomever they choose. And for those who are forced into a loveless marriage, they in turn beget more loveless marriages by following a well-trodden pattern, which some call tradition.

There was a time when the mistress of King Charles VII of France, her name was Agnes Sorel, was credited with popularizing a trend of women's fashion, to wear gowns with very low necklines to expose their breasts. It was considered scandalous at the time and yet for obvious reasons this scantily clad fashion had caught on, leading to décolleté gowns (low-necked). Some historians argue the nipples were not fully exposed. In my experience, however, where there's cleavage and bosom aplenty, the mere hint of seeing nipples is enough to entice a furtive glance to become a pair of ogling eyes, that can't tear themselves away, and they absolutely 100% need, and want to look.

Ah yes... love and lust are in the air, like the pollen and bees and bursting flowers and spread apart knees. It's an exciting time to be alive when you are alive. Truly, it's always an exciting time to be alive, more so when you have another heartbeat with whom you may share your lust. Go ahead. Roll around on the grass, by the riverbank. Wallow in your love, just don't let your lust get the better of you and remove your clothing.

There be eyes hidden in the bushes staring.
