To dream... perchance to actually sleep

2025-11-20
With the world turning upside down on its head at present, at least seemingly, as we're all forced to traverse rising grocery prices (thank you tariffs), I am of late struggling to complete a sleep cycle that doesn't include rolling, thundering waves. Take last night's dream, as a vivid example, I was in a sailboat, a big mother of a sailboat that ironically only required one person to steer, and a massive tidal wave swept the boat into a raging river that lead to Niagara Falls. Before I knew it, I was falling over the falls, sailboat and all, and felt powerless to stop the plunge. I woke up with my heart pounding so hard that I didn't want to go back to sleep.

Such is the stuff of turbulence when your wily and unpredictable subconscious decides to steer a sailboat, while your conscious mind has handed over the rudder to another captain. I'm a relatively calm individual by nature. I think the challenge of surviving skin cancer had forever changed my life priorities to such an extent that the stupid worries I used to have before the cancer no longer carry much weight with me. But life changes, like cancer, and many things are generally beyond our control. Now, you may be telling yourself that you're in control of your emotions, thoughts and actions, and you would be correct to think as much, but your subconscious is a territory of nebulous constriction and, dreams are the architect of intense inner worries that aren't necessarily articulated in the state of being asleep. This is the reason why in dreams our anxieties come home to roost. When you dream of thunder and rolling waves of tidal proportions and losing control, on the most basic of levels of understanding, you're concerned about losing control.

Ah yes... I remember control. I met the drunk bastard once at a cocktail party. Mr. Control was the silly wanker sitting in the dusty corner with a frilly lampshade on his knee because the lampshade was too tiny to fit his big fat head. And Mr. Control laughed himself silly thinking that adults were a bunch of fools to believe it is they who are in control, when Mr. Control knew otherwise. Mr. Control was in cahoots with Mr. Chaos and together they planned to take over the world and for a moment, I thought the dynamic duo just might win until along came Miss Chance, who batted her pretty eyelashes, stuck out her robust bosom, took the drinks out of the hands of Mr. Control and Mr. Chaos, downed both in two gulps, then turned and farted very loudly in defiance.

Mr. Control and Mr. Chaos stared back in horror. And, Miss Chance reminded them that it was their lucky break, that they had happened to come across her because she was going to meet up with Mother Nature later that night, and maybe if they behaved and acted right, she might arrange for them to have a meeting with Her, the supreme one, who up until that point in the evening didn't want to give either the time of day.

Mother Nature is her own natural phenomenon, unstoppable, and she doesn't have to pay her dues to Mr. Control and Mr. Chaos, who are the two lost cousins of reality. Chance happens when you acknowledge that to control the chaos in your life is like trying to consume a full bottle of fine whiskey while convincing yourself the effects of the alcohol haven't affected you one bit. You can control how you choose to regard your life and whether or not you choose to accept the chances that are thrown at your feet. Choose right or left or straight ahead. Either way, your life is supposed to be an adventure that includes both good and bad, and control and chaos and most assuredly, if you are lucky, a good dose of chance.

Grocery prices don't appear to be going down any time soon. I've personally noticed that some of my favourite brands, since the conclusion of the pandemic, have doubled in price, in some cases tripled. So the race is on, you greedy a** mo' fo's! I'm talking to you, large grocery chains. When the race is on, it means that us simple folk must crank up the online comparison price-shopping, before shelling out our hard-earned dollars to buy foods that we've come to rely on but it will also mean that if you're one of those persons who needlessly wastes food, perhaps you might grab hold a little tighter the reins of control, to wrestle the chaos of your dismissive habits, and look upon your leftovers as your means of implementing easy control.

I love leftovers. I'll take care of food prep on the weekends, and cook up a large amount to ensure that I get multiple meals (leftovers) for down the road. I'm not suggesting you should do the same but this is the one weapon with which you may use to inject some control in your life, to actively visit grocery stores, to hunt for the best price, and to make good and proper use of any leftovers.

As to tidal waves... ride that motion, my friend, and know that you'll eventually wake up, and when you do with your heart pounding, your mind all frazzled, you'll realize it was just another dramatic dream.
