That rough tongue of his...

Fascinations are like the seasons, forever in a state of flux and duty bound by virtue of their intrinsic nature to change, never repeating the same cycle twice in exactly the same manner. Fascinations are when we become taken with someone or something that we haven't necessarily set out to do.

If someone had told me that between the years of 1999 and 2003 I would become fascinated with writing erotic poetry, I'd never have believed them, any more than I'd believe that this frenzied scratching out of free verse would then evolve into vampire fiction with more than a few dashes of erotica thrown in for good measure; this too I wouldn't readily have believed a word of their rubbish. But it happened. And there I had found myself, clearly fascinated with my own writings, enough to the point that I ended up releasing three collections of erotic poetry and then six novels of vampire fiction, a sub-genre of the fantasy genre, which I later learned should actually be referred to as urban paranormal, when a supernatural creature (vampires) co-exist with humans, and the urban refers to the setting taking place in a contemporary city.

Fascinations change, yet again. I moved from one passion of writing free verse, to urban paranormal, to then venture into High Fantasy which I renamed as Hybrid Fantasy owing to my seventh novel combining urban paranormal with high fantasy. The newest element, high fantasy, is about world building, starting from nothing, to build within your world a whole set of fantastical characters, a world that no one has had prior experience with, and hopefully this originality will captivate them. And, once this fascination took root, I found myself beginning novel eight, which continues the saga that I created for Portals of Middle-Vision, or as I like to refer to novel seven by its acronym: POM.

Fascinations truly fascinate me, such as the fascination I recall that my deceased male kitty had with almond butter. Whenever I would eat toasted rye bread on the weekends, with almond butter and a splash of jam, my male kitty would run to my side, and beg to lick some of the almond butter off my finger. That rough tongue of his was distinctive, and it's easy to incorporate subtle yet defined characteristics like this into a fantasy story, which is precisely where I'm headed in this rambling blog post, to point out that living our lives, getting up each day, going about our business will naturally and inevitably fall into a routine, even if you tell yourself that you're different, that you're not like anyone else, that you don't follow an ordinary routine — that you're not an 'ordinary' person. I guarantee you that you have fallen into a routine and that you are an ordinary human being. The next time you step into the shower, be mindful how you begin to wash your body. I'm willing to bet you begin to wash the same arm every time. Then you might migrate to the next arm, followed by your shoulders, neck, back, belly, legs, feet, toes and private parts. The routine is like music, a set of notes that when strung together will make a beautiful sound, a melody, a chorus, a soulful expression, like a kitty with a penchant for almond butter with a very noticeably rough tongue.

Individual character traits, wherever they come from, are what make a character stand out; weird quirks, and mannerisms that we all display, when we're being ourselves and minding our own business. Here, then, we are less ordinary and more distinctive. I learned to accept long ago that I'm nothing special, just another human being, living and enduring the human experience, very much aware that the range of human emotions and experiences are shared by many — some of course live much harder lives, while others live the Life of Riley, a very easy and comfy life.

However, my poetry and urban paranormal fantasies and now hybrid fantasy are hopefully different. And if a reader comes along and tells me they enjoyed my work, this truly makes me feel alive, like the goose-bumps that spilled across my skin, whenever Brando's rough tongue would make contact with my skin.

Happy New Year folks! My year has begun with a kick in the caboose, a subject that I may delve into later, way down the road, once I find my balance. May the year of 2026 roll out some wonderful surprises for you.
