Today being my birthday (against my wishes, mind you), I've decided to indulge in some shameless self-promotion, and this will be followed up later today with a delicious Bellini slushy (peaches, Prosecco and peach schnapps), to include some yummy nibbles, after which a bottle of Rose wine may find it way to my lips. It's important to celebrate yourself, as much as it is to continue writing your current Work-In-Progress, as well as your blog.
So here I go!
That's how it went. As I finished re-reading my first novel, The Crimson Man — A Fantasy, in preparation for releasing a second edition, I read through my First Edition, after not having read it for one year, and I sat back in my reading chair, after digesting the very last paragraph, thinking my personal thoughts, "Hey, you erotica writing lassie! That's not half fecking bad and you're even aroused."
A long measuring stick should be tucked into the back pocket of every writer to enable them to gauge the authenticity of their own work by way of the real-life responses of their own body. If you hurl your cookies after reading your own material, this might suggest that you're disappointed with your efforts. If, however, and assuming that you've dabbled in writing erotica, and you actually feel a twinge down below and experience a quickened heartbeat, then it might suggest that your writings are indeed having an effect on your body. I haven't forgotten. My first novel was intentional, to write a story steeped in erotica, which is to say more sex than story. I wanted to create a work of cliterature and I believe I succeeded. At the time I wrote this novel, I attempted to talk dirty to the reader because in my personal relationships with men, this was a talent that was often lacking in their repertoire, or rather their pillow-talk skills. Men are not naturally predisposed to dirty talk, when they're known to be turned on visually, which is often times contrary to the case with women, who are initially first stimulated intellectually, before their body follows.
As I've posted at least twice in the past, men love with their eyes, while women love with their ears. It was with this sentiment in mind that I had set out to write as raw a novel as I could, rude some might call it, and the characters' sole goal was to get off, to get it on, to get it going at every turn imaginable. Lemme assure you that writing sex scenes is anything but easy. At some point in time, you have to develop the story and the characters, despite wanting to rip every page with a scene of unbridled lust. The point being is that I was attempting to demonstrate the level of passion of two people experiencing the beginning of their newfound love. We all know what this is like, that feeling of arousal which eclipses our waking thoughts, every day. Our first impulse is to want to swap fluids with our new squeeze. All you need do is be present in their presence, think about them, think about your last encounter and your memory and brain recall the feelings associated with these thoughts.
Arousal needs to be awoken from its deep slumber.
Arousal and passion and lust and sex, the essential elements of any good erotica story. I've been told by many people who've read The Crimson Man that they had particularly liked reading it with their partner to rev up their engines. This is a grand thing, I tell them. Read on! However, after these same happy customers finished my second Crimson novel, The Crimson Boy, they made it a point to circle back with me to express their disappointment that the same level of raunch wasn't replicated. There are loads of sexy scenes in my second novel, though not necessarily on the same level as the first one.
Writers are prone to wanting to write a different novel each time they write a new one, rather than copy the same format. No need to despair, however. Because novel two is raunchy in its own right.
I got caught up during the long Family Day holiday weekend in Ontario in February by finishing season four of Bridgerton. Admittedly, the level of steamy scenes has evolved in this hugely popular Netflix series, and I'm happy to see that some of the main characters are voluptuous and randy, rather than to depict our media-influenced idea of beauty of super-skinny, a waif with zero curves vs a voluptuous bosom to rival Mae West. But is it the same? Is it as eroticizing to read erotica or to view it on screen? Men would assure you that porn gets them revved up vs reading erotica, but again, not with women, as I've learned over the years. We need to hear the build-up, to allow erotic thoughts to ferment in our minds, before we allow him to tear off our clothes.
The fourth season of Bridgerton is highly suggestive, using clever language, such as the substitute word 'pinnacle' when referring to the female orgasm.
Arousal is free for the taking. Perhaps it may be time to look outside your standard methods, to pick up a book, to read to your lover. Of course, you can wait for summer to let your eyes wander. But when indoors, let your mind and fingers do the wandering and you'll be delighted to know that your body still works regardless of your age or social standing. That's what I love about arousal, it doesn't discriminate between races.
Arousal just is...
I am mindful too, regrettably, of the current climate steeped in the release of the E-Files. However, erotica isn't in any way, shape or form on par with the abhorrent behavior of these wretched individuals, predating on young kids. I debated if I should release this blog post, and in the end I decided that I should. We are all adults and when dealing with consenting adults, there should be no barriers — and this is the underlying difference between depravity of illegal acts vs adult fun and erotica.
As an author, we reserve the right at whim to switch up the presentation of our novel covers, so here's the Sepia Cinemascope version of all six novels in my Crimson Fantasy series. These sepia covers were used when I had uploaded to my Amazon KDP account the two Trilogy e-versions, so I used the individual sepia covers to separate between each novel.
And on it goes... let your fingers do the stroking or your spoken words, and if the dirty words don't come easily to you, no worries. I'd recommend you reach for a book on erotica to help guide you along the slippery road of the female body.
Upcoming Event I hope to make an appearance at the Ottawa Romance Book Fair, when a date is officially announced for 2027. This is a one-day event held at the Conference Centre, so check back soon for updates.
