Where there's passion there is creation, and creation can sometimes include folly and fire. Fire being the eruption of one's temper and folly being the headlong dive into troublesome waters, those of the relationship and familial variety where tempers can often collide.
I like to believe that I've been gifted with creative passion. I approach my writing projects with passion to the point that I can chip away at the hours and not feel drained or tired to continue. My passion sustains me throughout the entire process. My passion has also lead me down the path of foolishness, some times preventing me from seeing the truth of an individual's character. In the past, I've allowed passion to guide me. Passion can also present itself in the form of hate, for passion is about depth of emotion and emotions don't necessarily differentiate between right or wrong; emotions are simply what they are, an open circuit of feeling. However, to waste precious passion on hating a competitor, or worse an enemy, to me is a form of folly. In that instance your passion and your inability to control it are ultimately carried out at the expense of your own happiness.
It's all fine and dandy to engage in an intellectual discussion about the presence of passion in your life, or lack thereof but the fact is living without passion is as empty as looking into the bottom of a barrel. You know the barrel should and can be filled with many things yet if passion is absent, the barrel will always simply be an empty barrel and nothing more.
When I last spoke with one friend in Montreal, our conversation turned to the subject of passion in our lives. I stated that having passion for a personal project is not the same as carrying passion, or lust, for a partner. She agreed, then qualified that passion held for someone else can be thwarted if that passion isn't reciprocated. And she's right. Having passion for your projects is more than likely destined to remain strong because you're at the forefront of the project and are not relying on the returned feelings of another person to carry the passion along further.
So which carries greater value: passion for projects or passion for people?
Passion is a melting pot. The point being that you as the individual have to be able to feel passion on some level for something. I'm not speaking about the kind of passion expressed by way of parking your fanny in front of a TV to watch sports. I'm talking about the kind of passion that keeps you pushing forward, despite all obstacles to the contrary. It is the presence of passion that compels you to move forward. And, if it occurs that you become stuck in a rut, as an example in the creation of an art form, your passion will urge you to explore on, to look for a resolution that'll help to free up your creative juices. That is precisely the kind of passion about which I speak.
As for hockey, football, golf and basketball, and other sports that spill out before your eyes across a wide screen, this isn't passion which fills your heart as you watch but rather a form of admiration, at least to my way of thinking. For the athletes playing these sports, taking risks in avoiding injury, battling the competition, well these are the men and women filled with passion, a deep well of passion for activities that few are qualified on a professional level to actively participate, regardless of the passion that others have in believing they should be playing.
Scream and point your finger at me. Accuse me of being wrong. Tell me having passion for your favorite sport is genuine. That's OK by me if this post touches a nerve. Let your passion run wild and set me straight because I never want to be that kind of person who would thwart the passion of anyone, least of all myself.
