Because the child in all of us is susceptible to wishful thinking, many a time I've played a game with myself and with friends (after a few drinky-poos, coincidentally) whereby I encourage them to share with me their three wishes. The one caveat I stipulate is not being able to use one wish to ask for more wishes. It's a foolish, childish game but as I said, the child in all of us, and me included, likes to flex its imagination. Also, I believe, playing the three wishes game opens a portal into the psyche of your secret desires and that of your friends.
Ready? You get to make three wishes and they can't be about ridding the world of hunger or war or bringing about world peace bcus this game is about entering into total fantasy-land. In all the human history recorded, surpassing 6,000 years, not once has the human population co-existed without these harsh realities. I know. I know. It's not fair. Boo-hoo. Your wishes have to be about you, for you, for your dreams or obsessions and not about anyone else. That is the purpose of playing this game, to determine exactly what you'd want to bring into your life, or remove for that matter.
I'm always amused by the answers I hear from people, especially my closest friends because it proves that you don't really know someone as much as you think you know them. Most of the time, people tell me they want to be a billionaire or immortal. Now, I won't pass judgement on these replies, however megalomaniac they may come across (couldn't resist), but all to say that in playing this silly, little game, why not flex your own special brand of imagination and come up with something truly unusual.
These are mine, if granted:
Wish #1: I'd like to sleep peacefully each night, not for fourteen hours or only two; a good solid sleep each night of seven hours, undisturbed hours that do not include waking up to go for a tinkle. Dreams can be weird, naturally, as they so often are but so long as sleep is there, and constant, imagine how happy you'd be. The lack of sleep in peoples lives determines their mood and thinking and, rarely, do people attribute their poor health or psychological problems to lack of sleep. Perhaps they should. We sleep one third of our lives or we attempt to sleep; hence the reason behind this wish.
Wish #2: To be able to speak six additional languages of my choosing. I only speak English right now, so I'd love to be able to add into this mix: German, Arabic, Spanish, French, Russian and Mandarin Chinese. I don't want a tonne of money because money brings a tonne of problems. However, if I could speak multiple languages as though they were my mother tongue, like English, imagine the number of opportunities this would open up for me, not to mention being able to travel without the hindrance of communication barriers. I realize we have APPs now that translate in real time but it's not quite the same as seamlessly moving from one dialect to another in natural conversation.
Wish #3: A simple choice for my third and final wish, to be able to heal injuries without the aid of surgery or long-term medication, not that I'm on medication. I've personally healed from serious cancer surgeries and in some cases it took me years, and people were not always necessarily the most compassionate of beings upon seeing a scar that is undergoing the stages of healing; they naturally shy away from engaging in intimacy with you. I can't say that I blame them, but this isn't the only reason for this third wish; it's the degree of disfigurement that comes with plastic surgery as a result of skin cancer. Your skin runs a higher risk of changing colour, not for the better, like a much darker shade than your natural skin tone, the very spot where the skin had healed from the surgery and this means applying extra SPF for the rest of your bleedin' life. As previously stated, I've survived two of these surgeries so I speak from first-hand experience. Throughout most cultures, healers are regarded as special, their skills sought-after, but I'm just asking for myself at this stage, to coincide with the restrictions on this game of making three wishes. So there you go!
Allow me to remind you that we are the human animal. Every day we experience a gamut of emotions as we slog it out at work or in dealing with children and spouses, colleagues, etc., all with the aim of pursuing our passions and dreams, and hobbies. With these thoughts in mind, perhaps your wish is to have a longer schlong or mathematical ability (another one of my dormant wishes as I'm a dullard in math). Let your imagination run amok, is my best advice.
I've heard of some dandy wishes from friends and the conversations that ensued from this game have lead to some great laughs. Conversation should stimulate and titillate and if it is the internal world that intrigues you and you decide you're ready to dig deeper into your psyche and that of your friends, well my dears, I recommend you try my game or devise one of your own.
Upcoming Event I hope to make an appearance at the Ottawa Romance Book Fair, when a date is officially announced for 2027. This is a one-day event held at the Conference Centre, so check back soon for updates.
