The subject line would suggest that lately I've gone hog wild with something, enough to the point that I've lost all control or rather that I choose to go hog wild and throw control out the window of a fast-moving car. That funny expression is an oldie but a goodie, one of many to be found in the English language of funny humans. Allow me to digress for a moment. I consulted my Canadian edition of the Farmer's Almanac on the subject of raising pigs to see if I could uncover the origins of this expression.
This is what I've discovered:
* a newborn pig is a piglet
* a young pig, following weaning is a shoat
* an adult domesticated pig, typically heavier than 120 pounds is a hog
* a male pig is a boar (rather than a bore.. wink, wink)
* the old-fashioned word for a herd of wild pigs is a sounder
* a herd of domesticated pigs is a drift
Therefore, and logically, I've concluded that bcus most adults weight more than 120 pounds, the expression 'going hog wild' must be attributed to the rude, crude and lascivious behaviour of adults drinking their fool faces off and then gorging on chili and chicken wings without a snoot of care for their bulging bellies. Adults are naturals when it comes to going hog wild, more so than say a drift or sounder of pigs. Pigs we expect to go wild, especially when there's a trough full of slop to wade into but humans? I daresay we are expected to rise above this foolish behaviour, to conduct ourselves like intelligent, reserved and civilized beings. Then, there are those who love to go hog wild when it comes to spending money, often attributed to females with a fetish for shoes and men are known for their hog wild behaviour when it comes to indulging in sports past-times such as the Stanley Cup playoffs, NBA, NFL - take your pick, as well as in buying premium runners.
Seems to me that humans and pigs when compared against each other are not so different, at least in our approach to life. Pigs are intelligent and socialized which explains why they sleep on top of each other bcus of that need for familial contact. If you place a herd of pigs in a pen w/ multiple compartments, the pigs will automatically set aside one area for eating, one area for pooping and peeing, and another area for raising more wee piglets. Pigs only appear to go hog wild when dinner scraps are thrown into the big trough for munching, and then the squeals of delight will explode, not so far off from humans in noisy, crowded clubs w/ finger food and an open bar.
Humans, on the other hand, have mastered the art of going hog wild since the days when beer came into fashion in England in the 1500s, during Shakespeare's time (not to exclude the fact that beer was invented 7,000 years ago) and also when they had uncovered their undying lust for greed, power and wealth, translated into the seizure of gold and precious jewels. Nor should we point the finger at the practice of the Mayans and their rituals of sacrificing human hearts to the Gods to achieve a state of awe. This wouldn't classify as going hog wild bcus if every human lived forever and not one of us died in all the years we've been alive (using up our planet's natural resources), we'd have an over abundance of humans and then someone would really have to go hog wild and kill a lot of people to make room for more.
So now, my friends, I shall go hog wild and break open a brand new bar of dark chocolate and get to bloody work, while a solitary wedge of goodness dissolves ever so slowly on my tongue.
Upcoming Event I hope to make an appearance at the Ottawa Romance Book Fair, when a date is officially announced for 2027. This is a one-day event held at the Conference Centre, so check back soon for updates.
